Improvements clinical hold the key to reducing printing costs
William H. Nelson, MBA, is president of the Inter Mountain Health Care (IHC), an integrated system, that the delivery of 22 hospitals, a doctor at the division, health plans and IHC, the largest Managed Care Organization in Utah. IHC has been selected as the official supplier for 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
Prior to his current position, Nelson served as Executive Vice President of the Inter Mountain Health Care, he is a member of the Utah’s HFMA chapter.
HFM: Describe Inter Mountain Health Care (IHC) and your responsibility to the organization.
Nelson: IHC is a system composed of three elements: 22 hospitals, health and a doctor of the division, which employs approximately 400 doctors in 2000 another nonemployee affiliated physicians. IHC ensure health insurance on 500000 living in the State of Utah and about 25 per cent of our hospital.
My main task is a strategic position, IC to ensure service excellence, which depends on us. The report to me, among others, is the person for all our medical services, the person responsible for our fiscal management, health plans and information systems, and the person responsible for our strategic planning. In addition, human resources, Public Relations, community activities and legal affairs report to me.
HFM: What IHC-service and the mix of patients? How IHC percent of patients are members of the health plan?
Nelson: The service is valid in the key area for the entire state of Utah and parts of south-east of Idaho. Given that our patients-Mix, Medicare represents about 33 percent of Mix, Medicaid is about 10 percent, charity and private pay about 10 per cent and the rest of commercial insurance. About half of our population commercial insurance IHC is enrolled in the health plan, and the rest of Managed Care other organizations with whom we dealt.
HFM: Are you facing challenges specific service in your area?
Nelson: We are the largest insurer in our region, we are often a lightning rod for the doctor, particularly in regard to payment. If the federal government has cut Medicare payments and is provided in the commercial market for funds Medicare, physicians tend debt for us, the fee schedules, which it wants to be. They are not properly understand the dynamics of trade and manage the health insurance market.
HFM: How do you imagine this challenge?
Nelson: It is a hard, a continuous process. How a system, we have a small group meetings with key groups doctor and doctor to explain the realities of the market, trying to help them understand the dynamics of work.
